Ernest J. Gaines

Ernest J. Gaines es un reconocido autor de ficción literaria estadounidense, famoso por sus cautivantes obras de ficción. Nació el 15 de enero de 1933 en Louisiana y se crio en una familia de aparceros, comenzando a recoger algodón en los campos a los nueve años. Asistió a la escuela solo durante cinco o seis meses al año, y cuando tenía quince años se mudó a California para unirse a su madre y padrastro, ya que no había high school para afroamericanos en su parroquia de Louisiana. Fue en California donde Gaines comenzó a escribir.

La carrera de escritor de Gaines despegó después de asistir a la Universidad Estatal de San Francisco, prestar servicio en el ejército y ganar una beca de escritura en la Universidad de Stanford. Sus obras se han enseñado en aulas universitarias y se han traducido a varios idiomas, como el francés, el español, el alemán, el ruso y el chino. Cuatro de sus obras han sido adaptadas a películas de televisión, y su novela de 1993, "A Lesson Before Dying", ganó el premio National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction.
