Clifford D. Simak fue un autor de ciencia ficción altamente reconocido, conocido por su prolífica escritura y numerosos premios a lo largo de su carrera. Nació en 1904 en una granja del suroeste de Wisconsin y comenzó su carrera como periodista. Simak trabajó en un pequeño periódico antes de convertirse en editor de noticias del Minneapolis Star-Tribune, donde escribió ficción en su tiempo libre.
La escritura de Simak le valió muchos reconocimientos en la comunidad de la ciencia ficción. Fue galardonado con tres premios Hugo, un premio Nebula y fue nombrado tercer Gran Maestro por la Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) en 1977.
