Alexander McCall Smith es un autor muy prolífico y popular, conocido principalmente por su aclamada serie "No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency". Nació en Bulawayo, Rodesia (ahora Zimbabue) el 24 de agosto de 1948, tiene nacionalidad británica y actualmente reside en Escocia.
McCall Smith es autor de varias series, incluyendo "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency", "Professor Dr. Von Igelfeld Entertainment", "Isabel Dalhousie", "44 Scotland Street", entre otras. Además de sus obras de ficción, también escribe libros de derecho médico y bioética sin ficción. Antes de su carrera como escritor, fue profesor de derecho en la Universidad de Botswana y profesor emérito de derecho médico en la Universidad de Edimburgo en Escocia.
