Salman Rushdie

Ahmed Salman Rushdie, más conocido como Salman Rushdie, es un autor británico de origen indio, famoso por la polémica en torno a su novela "Los Versos Satánicos". Rushdie nació en Mumbai, India, en 1947, hijo de una madre maestra y un acaudalado padre mercante. Realizó sus estudios primarios en una prestigiosa escuela privada en Bombay antes de ser enviado al Rugby School en Warwickshire, Inglaterra. Posteriormente, estudió historia en el King's College de la Universidad de Cambridge.

La carrera de Rushdie como escritor comenzó en la década de 1970, luego de regresar a Inglaterra tras una breve estadía en Pakistán. Trabajó como redactor publicitario antes de publicar su primera novela "Grimus" en 1975. A lo largo de los años, Rushdie ha recibido numerosos premios por su escritura. Es Comandante de las Artes y las Letras, miembro de la Royal Society of Literature y fue nombrado caballero por la reina Isabel en 2007 por sus servicios a la literatura. Algunas de sus obras más notables incluyen "Medianoche de los niños", que ganó el Premio Booker, y "El adiós al sultán de Mughal".

La publicación de "Los Versos Satánicos" en 1988 provocó protestas violentas de musulmanes en varios países, lo que resultó en amenazas de muerte y una fatwa emitida por el Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, el Líder Supremo de Irán, que llamaba a la ejecución de Rushdie. Esto lo obligó a vivir en el anonimato durante casi una década, apareciendo en público solo esporádicamente. En 2007, Rushdie fue nombrado Caballero Bachelor por sus contribuciones a la literatura y se desempeñó como Escritor Distinguido en Residencia en la Universidad Emory de 2007 a 2012.

Las obras de Rushdie a menudo reflejan sus experiencias de crecer en la India y Pakistán y su migración a Inglaterra. Su estilo de escritura se clasifica como realismo mágico y sus temas exploran las conexiones, interrupciones y migraciones entre los mundos oriental y occidental. Además de sus novelas y obras de no ficción, Rushdie también ha publicado cuentos y se desempeñó como coeditor de "The Vintage Book of Short Stories".
