Isaac Bashevis Singer

Isaac Bashevis Singer fue un autor polaco-estadounidense destacado, conocido por su obras en los ámbitos de la ciencia ficción, la fantasía y la literatura y ficción. Nació como Icek Hersz Zynger en el pueblo de Leocin, cerca de Varsovia, Polonia, el 21 de noviembre de 1902. Singer pasó sus años de formación en Krochmalna, una calle ubicada cerca del gueto judío de Varsovia, donde aprendió yiddish y se sumergió en la cultura del pueblo judío. Su padre se desempeñó como rabino, realizando diversas funciones religiosas y comunitarias, y sus hermanos mayores, Israel Joshua Singer y Esther Kreitman, también eran autores.

Singer desempeñó un papel significativo en el movimiento literario yiddish al elegir escribir y publicar únicamente en yiddish. Durante la Primera Guerra Mundial, su familia experimentó graves dificultades, lo que llevó a su separación por razones de seguridad. A pesar de estos desafíos, prosperó su carrera de escritura y ganó reconocimiento por su trabajo. En 1978, recibió el Premio Nobel de Literatura por sus contribuciones al campo. El memorial de Singer, "A Day Of Pleasure: Stories of a Boy Growing Up in Warsaw", ganó el Premio Nacional del Libro de EE. UU. en Literatura Infantil en 1970, y su colección "A Crown of Feathers and Other Stories" ganó el Premio Nacional del Libro de EE. UU. en Ficción en 1974.
