Gemma Files, nacida el 4 de abril de 1968 en Londres, Inglaterra, es hija de dos actores, Elva Mai Hoover y Gary Files. Ha pasado la mayor parte de su vida en Toronto, Canadá. Inicialmente, ganó reconocimiento como crítica de cine, docente y guionista. Sin embargo, el salto de Files a la escena internacional del horror se produjo cuando su historia corta "The Emperor's Old Bones" ganó el Premio Internacional de Horror Guild a la Mejor Ficción Corta en 1999. Este reconocimiento impulsó su carrera como escritora y la estableció como una figura destacada en el género de terror.
Gemma Files tiene una amplia bibliografía, incluyendo dos colecciones de relatos cortos, Kissing Carrion y The Worm in Every Heart, publicadas por Prime Books. También ha publicado dos plaquettes de poesía, Bent Under Night y Dust Radio, de Sinnersphere Productions y Kelp Queen Press, respectivamente. En 2010, Files publicó su primera novela, A Book of Tongues: Volume One in the Hexslinger Series, publicada por ChiZine Publications.
