Agatha Christie, nacida en 1890 en Torquay, Inglaterra, fue una novelista británica muy celebrada y reservada. Es mejor conocida por sus novelas de detectives, en las que creó a los famosos personajes Hercule Poirot y Miss Marple. Con cuatro mil millones de novelas vendidas en todo el mundo, es la novelista más vendida de todos los tiempos, según el Libro Guinness de los Récords Mundiales.
Christie fue educada en casa y se enseñó a leer a sí misma a los cinco años, lo que era inusual para el cambio de siglo. Su madre alentó su escritura, y su padre fue su principal maestro. Creció en Torquay en el suroeste de Inglaterra, donde más tarde situaría algunas de sus novelas.
Durante la Primera Guerra Mundial, Christie trabajó en un hospital como enfermera y más tarde en una farmacia del hospital, lo que influyó en su trabajo, ya que muchos de los asesinatos en sus libros implican veneno. Su primer novelas, "El misterioso asunto de Styles", fue publicado en 1920. Escribió más de 100 novelas, obras de teatro y colecciones de relatos cortos durante su vida, con sus libros vendiendo más de mil millones de copias en inglés y otros mil millones en más de 100 idiomas extranjeros.
Además de sus novelas de detectives, Christie también escribió novelas románticas bajo el seudónimo de Mary Westmacott. Se casó con el arqueólogo Max Mallowan en 1930, y su matrimonio fue feliz hasta su muerte en 1976. Sus viajes con Mallowan le proporcionaron inspiración para varias de sus novelas situadas en el Medio Oriente. Christie fue nombrada Comandante del Imperio Británico por sus muchas obras literarias.
